Summerhays, from Scottsdale, Arizona, has his family with him - wife Barbara Jean and children Preston, Grace and Cameron. He's busy on the course and he's busy being a tourist with his family.
"We are going to try and hit all the high spots until we start driving home after the July 15th event [the Players Cup in Winnipeg]. My kids are great travellers and this is a great way for them to learn a new culture," Summerhays said.
"We have been to the [Royal B.C.] museum and the Fairmont Empress.''
"I'll be talking to some of the guys on this tour and get some ideas about what to see while we are crossing Western Canada. When we came here, we also had our first ferry rides."
On Friday, Preston, 9, walked the round with his dad. Grace, 7, and Cameron, 4, were with Barbara Jean; they watched him tee off before leaving. "Cameron is just too loud right now at the golf course.''
Summerhays played on the PGA tour from 2004 to 2006 and then the Nationwide for a year.
"This is a great event here and it feels a lot like a Nationwide or PGA event. The volunteers and staff at the course do a great job.''
Summerhays recorded an even-par 70 on Friday to go with Thursday's opening round 2-under 68 to sit tied for 12th. Derek Gillespie of Oshawa, Ont., leads the field with a 7-under 133 total after a 4-under 66 on Friday.
The field was cut over the first two days, with the top 60 plus ties heading into the weekend. On Friday, the largest galleries followed Victoria's Cory Renfrew, who is tied for fourth along with fellow local Gordy Scutt at 4-under 135.
The third round begins today at 1 p.m. The event wraps up Sunday.
